Gospel music knows no bounds – echoing from the sanctuaries of Texas to the global stage. And at the heart of this melodic journey stands Tamela Mann, a revered icon of the genre and a proud resident of the Lone Star State.
This year marks Mann’s second consecutive year as a judge for the esteemed How Sweet The Sound gospel music competition, where she continues to inspire and provide a guiding voice for emerging talent. Mann shares, “It’s ok to be afraid – but this stage is for all upcoming artists because we all have to start somewhere. You are sharing the gift that God gave you and not just keeping it in a box.”
Mann’s illustrious career has been a beautifully orchestrated symphony of faith and talent, echoing from her early days singing in the church choir to commanding stages worldwide. Her musical skill, coupled with her captivating presence on screen, has solidified her status in both gospel music and entertainment.
Mann’s musical journey began at the age of 12 when she joined the church choir, showcasing an exceptional talent that would soon capture the hearts of audiences worldwide. Her breakout moment came when she joined forces with Kirk Franklin and the Family, becoming a primary vocalist on several tracks, including the soul-stirring “Now Behold the Lamb” and the uplifting anthem “Lean on Me.”
Mann’s solo journey began in 2005 with the release of her debut album, “Gotta Keep Movin’,” a soulful collection of songs that showcased her dynamic vocal range and heartfelt lyricism. The lead single, “Speak Lord,” soared to number 4 on the US Gospel chart, setting the stage for Mann’s ascent. In 2007, she followed up with her first live album, “The Live Experience,” a captivating showcase of her electrifying stage presence and ability to move audiences with her impassioned performances.
But it was Mann’s third studio album, “Best Days,” released in 2012, that catapulted her to new heights of success. Debuting at number 1 on the Billboard Top Gospel Albums chart and number 14 on the Billboard 200, “Best Days” struck a chord with listeners around the world, earning Mann critical acclaim and a slew of awards. The album’s lead single, “Take Me to the King,” became the standout hit, soaring to the top of the charts, and earning Mann a Grammy nomination for Best Gospel/Contemporary Christian Music Performance.
Mann’s success as a recording artist is matched only by her acting ability, with a string of memorable roles in various Tyler Perry productions. From her breakout performance in the stage play “I Can Do Bad All By Myself” to box office hits such as “Diary of a Mad Black Woman,” “Madea’s Big Happy Family,” and her starring role in the TBS sitcom “Meet the Browns,” Mann has captivated audiences.
In addition to her musical and acting pursuits, Mann has also made waves as a fashion entrepreneur, launching her own line of clothing, the Tamela Mann Collection. Designed for the curvy woman, the brand offers a variety of athleisure and workout wear that embodies Mann’s signature style.
Joining Mann on the judging panel at How Sweet The Sound are the revered and talented Hezekiah Walker, JJ Hairston, Jonathan McReynolds, and Ricky Dillard, with the incomparable Donald Lawrence returning as the longtime host.
How Sweet The Sound, has become the premiere competition for gospel music, spoken word, and dance. Under the ownership of Gentle Giant Music Ministries, with CEO Nathanael Brown, the competition has evolved into an international platform.
The 2024 edition promises to be a testament to the power of music, with sponsors such as P&G, Glory Foods, Compassion International, the Ad Council, and the Huntsman Mental Health Institute with their “Love, Your Mind” campaign, an effort aimed at destigmatizing mental health in the Black community.
Glory Foods’ campaign invites contestants and audience members to reflect on “What Feeds Your Soul,” celebrating the moments and experiences that nourish us from within. Glory Foods will offer a year’s supply of their products to those who share their heartfelt stories.
Amplifying the competition’s reach and impact is a national television distribution deal with FOX Soul. This will allow gospel music enthusiasts to witness How Sweet The Sound from the comfort of their homes on affiliate platforms like Samsung TV Plus, YouTube TV, Apple TV+, and many others.
Tamela Mann has four children and lives in Dallas, TX with her husband – singer, actor, and entertainer David Mann.
How Sweet the Sound will be held at Atlanta’s Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre on June 1, 2024, at 8 pm.
