Mark L. Madrid’s story begins on a humble farm in rural Texas, where grit wasn’t just admired—it was necessary. Now the CEO and Founder of Breakthrough Mavens, LLC, and a former Wall Street banker and national leader, Madrid has never forgotten the lessons rooted in his upbringing. Those early mornings watching his parents rise before dawn and face life’s uncertainties with heart and resilience became the foundation for his leadership philosophy.

“Grit is not just a word, it is a way of life,” Madrid says. “When I made the leap from the cotton fields of Texas to Wall Street, I carried their lessons with me: work ethic, humility, and the belief that no job is too small, and no dream is beyond reach.”

Today, Madrid is recognized as a passionate advocate for the 34.8 million small businesses that form a critical part of the American economy. Through Breakthrough Mavens and his podcast Small Business is Big Business, he leverages his experience from Wall Street to Main Street to support entrepreneurs from all walks of life. His mission is focused on democratizing access to opportunity, education, and innovation for small businesses across the U.S.

“This is personal,” he says. “I’m a small business owner myself now. I know firsthand the sacrifices and the triumphs. My mission is to fuel long-term success and sustainability—with the experience of Wall Street and the determination of rural America.”

Madrid’s focus on small businesses is not just based on economic theory. He sees entrepreneurs as America’s “economic first responders”—resilient individuals who contribute significantly to the nation’s GDP and play an essential role in job creation. To support them, Madrid emphasizes practical education over jargon, particularly when it comes to accessing capital, and is passionate about introducing forward-thinking tools, such as artificial intelligence.

Indeed, AI is one of Madrid’s latest areas of interest. As a self-described AI futurist, he has teamed up with award-winning economic developer Kevin Joins to co-author the Interview With AI Guidebook series. Their third installment explores the potential for economic transformation—addressing challenges like poverty, homelessness, Medicare sustainability, and the U.S. deficit—all through the lens of entrepreneurship.

“AI is an incredible tool—when used with clear value, intention, and integrity,” Madrid explains. “It’s not here to replace us, but to support us.”

In collaboration with Guillermo Diaz Jr. at Conectado, Madrid is bringing AI-powered, fractional C-suite solutions to small businesses. The results are tangible: improved efficiency, enhanced productivity, and the opening of new revenue streams. His approach shows that high-tech innovation doesn’t have to be confined to Silicon Valley—it can and should be available to the corner shop, the solopreneur, and the family-run enterprise.

Beyond his business endeavors, Madrid is also a published author. His contribution to The Leader’s Playbook: CEOs Transforming Vision into Action offers his perspective on leadership, providing insights for emerging and experienced leaders alike. His chapter, centered around “leading from the inside out,” combines high performance with empathy—a consistent theme in his approach.

“Energy is a powerful differentiator,” he asserts. “It sets the tone, builds culture, and drives action.”

His approach challenges traditional business success metrics. For Madrid, well-being is a key indicator of success. Empathy isn’t just a buzzword—it’s part of a holistic business strategy. And legacy isn’t something to wait until retirement to consider; it’s something to live every day.

“I live to compete and play to win, but always with integrity and compassion,” Madrid says. “Talk is cheap. Walking the talk is what matters most. The legacy I pursue isn’t about headlines, but about lives touched and businesses empowered.”

Madrid’s leadership playbook is as much about conviction as it is about clarity. He urges today’s CEOs and founders to become “Chief Energy Officers,” prioritizing people over processes and leading with intention and authenticity that inspires others to act. Whether through a podcast or in a boardroom, he advocates for leadership that is both effective and heart-centered.

As his mother’s health declines, Madrid reflects often on the source of his motivation. “I dedicate every milestone achieved to her, our family, my partner, my inner circle, and our pet,” he shares. It’s a reminder that behind every professional achievement is a deeply personal story of perseverance and purpose.

Mark L. Madrid is not only helping small businesses thrive—he’s redefining what leadership can look like in uncertain times. And through it all, he remains anchored by the values instilled in him during his time in rural Texas: resilience, humility, and an unwavering belief in the American dream.
