In the heart of Houston, Texas, a powerful alliance is forming to combat the devastating effects of lupus and urgently find a kidney donor. Gibson Lupus ARC, led by Zuriel Gibson, and Male Lupus Warrior, founded by Emmitt Henderson III, are joining forces to raise awareness and support for individuals battling this autoimmune disease.

Emmitt Henderson III’s journey with lupus began in 1995 when he was diagnosed with Systemic Lupus, a condition that would shape his life in profound ways. Despite facing numerous health challenges, including a visible rash and debilitating joint pain, Emmitt remained resilient, determined to overcome the odds. Fast forward to 2022, during an advocacy trip to Africa, Emmitt’s need for a kidney transplant became imminent, sparking an urgent call to action.

Zuriel Gibson’s battle with lupus commenced in 1997 after a near-death experience. Initially told she wouldn’t live past the age of twenty-four, Zuriel defied the odds and embarked on a journey of resilience and purpose. Through her own struggles with depression, pain, and addiction, Zuriel discovered a newfound strength and determination to make a difference in the lives of others affected by lupus.

The statistics surrounding lupus are staggering, with an estimated 1.5 million Americans and five million people worldwide affected by the disease. While lupus predominantly affects women, it’s crucial to recognize that men can also be impacted, with 1 out of 10 men diagnosed with the condition. Emmitt Henderson III and Zuriel Gibson are shining examples of courage and resilience in the face of adversity, inspiring hope and advocacy within their communities.

Emmitt’s day-to-day routine now consists of five-hour dialysis sessions starting at 6 am, alongside developing and attending events to advocate for lupus warriors. The Gibson Lupus ARC is postponing their annual Lupus International Pageant until 2024 in light of Male Lupus Warrior’s recent urgent awareness campaign for a kidney donor.

Both Emmitt and Zuriel share a common mission to empower individuals affected by lupus and provide them with the support and resources they need to thrive. Through their respective organizations, Male Lupus Warrior and Gibson Lupus ARC, they are working tirelessly to raise awareness, promote education, and advocate for research into this complex autoimmune disease.

As they continue their fight against lupus, Emmitt Henderson III and Zuriel Gibson invite others to join them in their mission. By raising awareness, supporting research, and providing vital resources, we can all play a role in improving the lives of those affected by lupus.
