Google is attempting to persuade the public that it is still the market leader in artificial intelligence technology.

So far, the internet behemoth has provided the incorrect remedy.

In an advertisement promoting its latest AI bot, the bot provided the erroneous response to a question.

Alphabet’s shares fell more than 7% on Wednesday, erasing $100 billion (£82 billion) from the company’s market capitalization.

In a Twitter ad issued on Monday, the bot, dubbed Bard, was asked what to tell a nine-year-old about what the James Webb Space Telescope had uncovered.

It claimed that the telescope was the first to capture images of a planet beyond our solar system. The European Very Large Telescope, on the other hand, did so in 2004. Astronomers quickly pointed out the inaccuracy on Twitter.

“Why didn’t you double-check this example before sharing it?” Newcastle University fellow Chris Harrison responded to the tweet.

Investors needed to be more enthused with the company’s presentation on how it planned to use artificial intelligence in its products.

Google has been under fire since the end of last year when Microsoft-backed OpenAI launched updated ChatGPT software. It immediately became popular because it could assist people in passing business school examinations, writing song lyrics, and answering other problems.

Microsoft revealed this week that the ChatGPT technology would be employed more advanced in a new version of its Bing search engine, which has lagged behind Google for years.

Investors have applauded the push for artificial intelligence, but detractors have warned that pushing the technology increases the risk of errors, distorted results, and plagiarism.

According to a Google official, the error demonstrated “how crucial a thorough testing procedure is, which we’re starting this week with our Trusted Tester program.”

“We’ll combine external feedback with our internal testing to ensure Bard’s answers match a high standard for quality, safety, and completeness of real-world information,” they explained.

Alphabet, the parent company of Google, fired off 12,000 employees worldwide last month. This amounted to roughly 6% of the company’s overall personnel.

What is Bard?

Bard is based on Google’s Lamda, a huge language model in its own right. One developer claimed that Lamda’s reactions were so human-like that he believed it could think for itself.

The IT behemoth also announced the addition of new AI technologies to its search engine.

In a previous blog post, Pichai stated that Bard intended to combine the breadth of the world’s knowledge with the strength, intelligence, and creativity of massive language models.

AI chatbots are designed to find information and answer inquiries. ChatGPT is the one that everyone is familiar with. People obtain much information from the internet, yet some are concerned that it contains offensive and incorrect information.

Mr. Pichai stated that he wants Google’s AI services to be “responsible and brave,” but he did not elaborate on how Bard will be prevented from distributing inappropriate or abusive content.

He stated that the platform would first run on a “lightweight” Lamda version, taking less power and letting more people utilize it simultaneously.

People expected Microsoft to incorporate the AI chatbot ChatGPT into its Bing search engine after investing billions of dollars in the company that created it, OpenAI. As a result, Google made its announcement.

ChatGPT will be able to answer inquiries and carry out requests using information obtained from the internet by 2021. It can also create speeches, music, advertisements, news reports, and student papers.

People can use it for free, but the corporation loses a few pence each time they do. So along with the free access, OpenAI has also unveiled a premium option.

The ultimate goal of chatbots is to replace web link pages in internet searches with a single decisive answer.

According to Sundar Pichai, individuals are utilizing Google searches to ask more complex inquiries than they used to.

Previously, the number of keys on a piano would have been a popular query. However, people are now more likely to inquire if it is more difficult to learn than the guitar, which is difficult to explain with facts.

What is Open AI?

OpenAI, a San Francisco-based firm, created chat GPT. It uses deep learning algorithms to react to search queries in a human-like manner.

In its latest version, Bing can provide more extensive responses to search requests rather than just website links.

Users can also chat with the bot to acquire more detailed responses to their questions. More relevant answers will be added to the right side of the search page.

The new Bing will be available immediately, but each person will be limited to a set number of searches.

The announcement came just one day after Google revealed details about Bard, their new chatbot.

Both companies are working hard to get their products to market.

Wedbush Securities analyst Dan Ives told investors in a letter sent following the news that Microsoft’s investment would “massively increase” the company’s capacity to compete.

Since Microsoft demonstrated the technology on November 30, things have moved swiftly.

Microsoft was one of the first tech corporations to invest in the company. The corporation announced last month that it would continue to collaborate with OpenAI in a “multiyear, multibillion-dollar investment.”
