In War of Shadows, book 2 in the Legends of Light & Shadows Series, Jennifer Aitken continues the journey of Lucius Xavier, a young hero navigating a rapidly expanding universe filled with both possibility and peril. As the sequel unfolds, the stakes rise dramatically, with new dimensions, evolving powers, and a growing darkness that threatens to consume everything in its path.

At the center of the story is Lucius, a character pulled toward a destiny he never asked for. His journey is shaped by a prophecy, yet the novel places equal weight on the choices he makes along the way.

“Although his journey begins with a prophecy, he struggles to accept it, of course,” Aitken explains. “But his choices show that he is curious at the very least about this prophecy and open to the opportunities and adventures it brings to his life.”

That balance between fate and free will becomes a defining force within the narrative. Lucius is not simply carried by destiny, he actively engages with it, revealing both his uncertainty and his resilience.

As the story broadens, so too does its world. War of Shadows moves beyond a single setting into multiple dimensions and civilizations, creating a layered universe that continues to evolve alongside its protagonist.

“Lucius’ evolution will always be at the centre of this story,” she says. “The further into his journey he goes, the more vast and amazing his Universe becomes.”

Opposing Lucius is Tartarus, an ancient and powerful force whose presence extends across dimensions. While Tartarus functions as a central antagonist, Aitken presents this darkness as something more complex than a purely external threat.

“Tartarus is definitely not just an external force,” she says. “The shadow that is weaved through this epic journey exists in the characters as well.”

This duality, between external conflict and internal struggle, runs throughout the novel, turning the battle between light and shadow into both a literal and symbolic confrontation.

“The battle between light and shadow exists through us all,” Aitken adds.

As Lucius trains and begins to understand the magnitude of his abilities, the narrative also explores the psychological weight of power.

“Lucius is dealing with immense pressure, less and less time to evolve and learn what energies live within him,” Aitken says. “Just because Lucius has been gifted with extraordinary energies, he still has to decide how or if he wants to use them.”

Throughout War of Shadows, the themes of light and shadow remain central, shaping both the narrative and the characters who inhabit it.

“The light within my story means so many things,” she explains. “Definitely, it represents hope and resilience… and how much strength and bravery it takes to make this happen.”

As the second installment in the Legends of Light & Shadows saga, War of Shadows builds on the foundation of the first book while expanding both its emotional and narrative scope.

Lucius’s journey is far from over. If anything, it has only just begun.
