The rapid progress made in modern science, technology, medicine, and economic prosperity have shaped our world in unparalleled ways. However, they have also left a trail of destructive elements, paralleled only by their adverse side effects. Mandated by the adamant principles of neoclassical economic theory, our naive deference for reductionist thinking slips silently into the fabric of society, leaving side-effects including wars, violence, poverty, social injustices, inequalities, and environmental degradation.
Assertively, one needs to reflect upon whether these prevailing theories and methods, seemingly the bedrock of human governance, are instead complicit, inadequate, or in some instances, even downright detrimental. One may argue that they lack essential safeguards for humanity to protect us from the cascade of the side effects previously mentioned.
This brings to mind the timeless wisdom of the ancient traditions and religions resonating with invaluable lessons that could potentially remedy the inaccuracies of our times. A powerful example of such a doctrine is “Ahimsa,” deeply rooted within the precincts of Jain, Buddhist, Hindu, and Yogic traditions. A profound belief in the sanctity of all living creatures, thereby endorsing the circumvention of harm and violence.
Imagine the manifold possibilities culminating from making Ahimsa a cornerstone of various spheres of societal functioning – nations, societies, communities, institutions, and businesses. Imagine Ahimsa being held on the same pedestal as GDP, profits, or power – whether political or economic. Countries would resolve disputes peacefully, products causing harm would be prohibited, and all human activities would dance in harmonious synchronization with nature itself.
The gravity of adopting spiritual principles such as Ahimsa is underlined by the grim reality of our times. Scientists warn that we are in the beginning of the 6th major extinction event, thereby putting our living planet in danger. Moreover, our entire biosphere is teetering on the brink of collapse within the foreseeable future, thereby necessitating urgent and lasting change. Hence, this is less of a utopian dream and more of a dire need for humanity to change its trajectory.
Indeed, as aptly put by Love+Truth,”We’re in a race to raise human consciousness.” This eloquent expression carries a widespread attraction among individuals, communities, and societies across the globe. It underscores the need to embrace our ancient wisdom to navigate the landscape of modern world issues. Today, we must leverage these timeless principles and spiritual doctrines to cultivate real-world solutions, ensuring an equitable world order for generations to come.
The transition into this regenerative paradigm would require the concerted efforts from all quarters of society. Embracing the essence of Life, imbibed in our ancient wisdom traditions, could indeed be our savior, enabling humanity to course-correct its current trajectory. Harmonizing the wisdom of the past with the needs of the present and the aspirations of the future might very well steer humanity away from dangerous cliffs, towards more regenerative, aware, and equitable pastures.
