History of Sam’s Club

The club was founded by Sam Walton and Wal-Mart in 1983. Sam Walton was heavily involved with the concept, which he had seen while working in a membership warehouse club. He had been impressed by the low prices and selection he saw, and his idea became a reality after he left Wal-Mart to start his own business. he started as a small warehouse club offering just five items: beans, cheese, soap, dog food and vodka (Polish Gold, no less!). In four short years, Sam’s Club has grown from 150 stores to a nationwide chain of over 600 warehouse clubs with more than 45 million U.S. and Puerto Rico members.
