This is the heart of Bachata Sensual America, a movement-turned-brand founded by Damian Guzman. What started as one man’s personal journey to rediscover himself through dance has now become a nationwide force.
Since 2021, Bachata Sensual America has produced over 20 events across the US, connecting thousands of dancers from dozens of countries. And every year, the energy rises to a peak at one place: Bachata Sensual Festival Houston, the flagship event that’s turning the city into a global bachata destination.
A Shy Engineer Finds His Rhythm
As someone who described himself as shy and introverted, dancing was a leap of faith for Damian. Yet, the mellifluous rhythms of bachata — particularly the sensual European style — called to him, and that calling quickly became an obsession.
When Damian attended his first major event, the DC Bachata Congress, in 2013, he was introduced to a world of global dancers. Soon after, he found himself flying to Spain and France to train with pioneers like Korke and Judith. At the time, Bachata Sensual was still under the radar in the US, which made these trips both necessary and advantageous for someone hoping to bring something new home.
In 2016, after becoming one of the first certified Bachata Sensual instructors in the country, Damian returned to Houston — only to find virtually no scene for bachata dancers. For some, that might have been a deterrent. For Damian, it was a blank canvas.
Building Houston’s Bachata Scene From Scratch
Determined to share what he had learned, Damian started working with local dance studios and DJs, bringing authentic Bachata Sensual to Houston. He launched Houston Loves Bachata, a monthly social that laid the groundwork for something bigger.
And in 2021, that something took shape.
Bachata Sensual Festival Houston was born out of a desire to bring the European dance experience stateside. The idea was to create an event that wasn’t just about steps or routines but about fostering an environment where connection thrived.
Despite the occasional snafu in logistics, scheduling, or navigating the early post-COVID travel world, the festival rapidly gained a following. Today, it draws dancers from over 30 states and 10 countries, making Houston a true destination for dance lovers.

What sets the festival apart is its ability to blend world-class instruction with a warm, inclusive atmosphere. Attendees don’t just come to watch performances — they come to dance, learn, and build community.

Ask Damian what keeps him going, and he won’t talk about accolades or ticket sales. Instead, he’ll talk about the transformation that happens on the dance floor.
“Bachata gave me confidence, helped me come out of my shell, and brought me friends from all over the world,” he says. “It’s not just about dance — it’s about connection.”

Through Bachata Sensual America, Damian has hosted over 20 events across the US, touching the lives of over 6,000 attendees from 44 countries. But Houston will always be where the vision started.

Hotels are booked, restaurants are filled, and dance studios see increased enrollment in the months after the event.
