Joseph Sciuto is not your typical author. His stories venture into the depths of human experience, yet they emerge with a message of hope. His latest novel, Miracle of the Rising Sun, exemplifies the resilience of the human spirit. At its core, the novel conveys a powerful message: even in the bleakest moments, renewal, connection, and love are always possible.
Born and raised in the Bronx, New York, Sciuto’s early years were shaped by a rich mix of cultures and experiences. Moving from a predominantly Italian and Irish Catholic neighborhood to a diverse housing project exposed him to people from all walks of life. This diversity profoundly influenced his understanding of humanity and later became the foundation for the characters and stories he created.
Sciuto’s career path was anything but straightforward. Before earning degrees in psychology, anthropology, and English literature at Stony Brook University, he briefly considered law enforcement. However, conversations with seasoned professionals led him to shift his focus to writing.
And then it began—the ongoing struggle of being a writer. His love for storytelling deepened during his 25 years at the Palm restaurant in Los Angeles, where he worked as a waiter and manager. He met various individuals there—from movie producers and war correspondents to studio executives and everyday people. It wasn’t just the famous or powerful who intrigued him; it was the stories of those who had faced unimaginable hardship that made a lasting impact. These encounters would later inspire his novels’ complex, deeply human characters.
Miracle of the Rising Sun is more than a novel—it reflects Sciuto’s belief in the power of human connection. The book follows several individuals, each grappling with personal demons, such as the trauma of war, the loss of a loved one, or childhood abuse. The novel’s title was inspired by a quote attributed to John Lennon: “Everybody is always asking to see a miracle.
